because he was a horrendous actor

Yeah - I picked up on that the first time. Rewatch just confirms it.

I have to admit that I may have judged Falco too harshly on my first watch. She played Carmela the way they wanted. It's not really her fault that the character is just so hit and miss. I blame the writing of her character, more so than any direction or acting failures.

Another problem is that she shared so many scenes with Gandolfini - he was such a good actor, and this is his acting masterpiece, it's tough not to look bad by comparison.

Which brings me back to AJ and Meadow - AJ was a lost cause. You can't tell how bad an actor is going to be when he's cast as a kid. He didn't develop as an actor and I believe that limited what they could do with the character.

Sigler, on the other hand, was pretty bad at first, but kind of found her legs as the series wore on. They didn't do her any favors when they cast Finn - Will Janowitz was crazy good as Finn - he had only been acting, professionally, for a couple of years when he was cast - in several of their scenes (the main one I'm thinking of is when he starts to pack to leave because of Vito) he makes her look like a first year theater student, by comparison.

But, the gangster casting of that show gets an A grade.
