When did suv's get so expensive?

When they started putting every creature comfort from luxury cars in them.

Back in the day a 4Runner Limited just meant you had standard leather and some body cladding. Now there's nav, power running boards, heated and cooled seats, etc. Couple that with inflation, and you get expensive SUVs.

I have a 2010 4runner 4wd now and looking for more room. And to the heated and cooled seats, that's an option I want in my next suv.

Truth, but the OP is trying to find expensive vehicles. I looked up that Summit, it a fully loaded a fully loaded Grand Cherokee. He's talking about 51k, but the base msrp is 30k. Maybe you don't need open pore wood and the other 20k in options ? So, your answer is SUVs got so expensive when folks wanted options like 20 inch wheels, 4wd they don't need, premium leather, navitgation/dvd, 400 hp engines, heated/cooled seats, HID headlamps, etc....
