It's possible to balance the two but there will always be compromise. If you purchase high quality in wall speakers they will have built in correction for the boundary affect. Is it perfect? No. Is it still perfectly adequate for the application? Absolutely.
If you want to listen to music critically you should have a 2 channel setup as Gaston suggested.
If you are building a home theater there is nothing wrong at all with quality in wall speakers. They acn sound fantastic.
