Really?? Who are a few elite head coaches who have flamed out in their first HC job and then come back as a successful HC at a big-time program. I don't think it works like that.

A guy gets a shot as head coach, and if he fails, he usually goes back to a coordinator position and doesn't elevate above that again. Maybe at a small program, but not at a big one.

Bill Belichick did that. Flamed out in Cleveland with Saban as an assistant.

The problem with Muschamp is that he carried the title of Head Coach (even if in waiting) from a large school.
He went from a large school to another large school

So he never had to get experience as a true Head Coach and grow into the job.

Maybe a little of Peter's Principle applies here.
