we finally recovered this little spike my dad shot for a doe at sundown

Congratulations and great job sticking with it. Unbelievable how far they can go sometimes! had a similar experience several years ago and with a small deer as well - buddy and I tracked it for hours, enough time for the moon to come up and see a full eclipse and then back to full moon! found deer and it was standing there looking at us. I did not have my bow (last time I made that mistake) so I had to run about 600 plus yards, grab my bow and return while my buddy watched the deer. Final shot and all was good.

We thought briefly that maybe we were pushing him due to how far he had gone and the amount of blood he was dropping. Almost considered pulling out to get the bow just in case he would be looking at us when we eventually caught up.
