So why stop the clock at all if you're afraid of them getting the ball back?

Or, why not call the play without the timeout?

Who knows? Would you be less upset if they snapped the ball to run a screen with 0:03 and didn't call a TO?

Meh. While I agree it was a rather futile attempt...it wasn't entirely pointless.
