Why is this?

Well, it depends on how many wireless clients you have and the size of your house. If you've got a laptop or two, plus phones and maybe a tablet, and a smart TV or two, and printer and a game console and a roku all using WiFi, you'll probably want something with a little more emphasis on wireless performance. Generally those gateways are crappy in terms of signal power and client load, but this is mostly coming from my experience with them a few years ago. They may have improved greatly since then.

If you want wireless n or ac and/or want to use the 5 GHZ band you need to supply your own router, which you configure as a wireless access point. You disable wireless on the ATT gateway when you do this.
