In a close quarters gun fight #6 and a slug will have the same spread.

but a slug will penetrate every house in the neighborhood. Birdshot wouldn't go through the second wall.

As someone who has taken about half the pellets from a 2 3/4” of #6 from a pretty good distance, I wouldn’t have wanted to get up and fight someone after I was shot.
