The past 3-4 years has really been a renaissance for bham. It was pretty shitty 5 years ago. The amount of restaurants/bars/breweries that have popped up recently is pretty crazy
It really is cool to see it happening. I've lived in this area for 10 years. My oldest child is 6 so I haven't really hit the late night bar scene in a while, but just the stuff that has come to downtown the past few years is amazing. I've been working downtown for 2.5 years now and in that time the new Regions Field/Railroad Park area has taken off. They're building something there now. I jogged past it about an hour ago, and it is a construction site. They're finally putting a legit grocery store downtown. Publix is slated to be built sometime next year. And the financial district where I work has a ton of old and new lunch/dinner options.
The Southside will never have a problem with good places making it. UAB and all that surrounds it will easily support any good business. It is the BJCC area that isn't going to have consistent customers, but that Uptown area looks nice from the few times I've driven past it.

The last thing I am hoping for is a legit bowling alley in the downtown/southside area. It would kill it with all the college students around there.
