PET SCAN was the thing that caught it.
My dad was initially diagnosed with lung cancer in May. He's had over 6 scans total ranging from PET, CT, MRI's. It wasn't until after the tumor on his lung was removed and had an additional scan that it was found. Even then it was supposed to be a small tumor (1cm). The scan at Emory is the one who made the diagnoses as stage 4. We even contacted the original Dr in my hometown afterwards and he couldn't believe it. He apologized repeatedly saying he never saw it on his scans.

I had a CT of the abdomen ~6 months ago that happened to catch the lower lobes of both lungs. The scan showed a 3mm tumor in the right lower lobe that had not been present 3 months prior. I followed up with my primary care physician who had to refer me to a pulmonologist due to requirements related to my health insurance and I was just seen by him last month. He performed a CT of my lungs (the first one that had actually been done specifically of my lungs since the tumor was inadvertently caught on the abdominal CT) and he told me that my right lung, all lobes, had multiple "ground glass consistency" tumors ranging in size from 1mm-10mm and that the left lung had "a couple" of the same tumors (didn't specify which lobe(s) of the left lung) that were close to 1mm. I don't know why, but he doesn't have me coming back until October 15 which is when he said he wanted to perform a bronchoscopy and biopsy of the tumors. I'm already looking into the Cancer Center of America in Atlanta since I live in SC, 15 minutes from Augusta, Georgia and 2 hours from metro Atlanta. Praying that by some miracle I won't need it, but I want to be prepared.
