My dad would always go up to the game with his buddies on an RV and when I was a teenager, I'd often bring a group of friends. My Dad loved going up close to game time and snagging tickets for us. Sometimes, he'd buy and sell 3 or 4 sets, progressively getting better seats for less money, and occasionally he'd even make a small profit. Those were great times.
Tickets were not as tight back then as they are now, especially for Bama. It is a risk, but if you're willing to roll the dice, your odds should be good and you can save a lot of coin. If you have people in your group who wouldn't take missing the stadium well, check all of the sites listed above over the next few weeks and you should be able to find a reasonable set.

Do not buy them outside the stadium. I can assure you that there will counterfiet tickets in the pool.
I also recommend wearing LSU gear. You will enjoy your stay much more.

Guys one last question (maybe). We're looking at staying in New Orleans Thursday and Friday. Someone recommended the Monteleone Hotel, but they're booked for that Friday night
Any other not crazy expensive hotels near Bourbon St. we should check out?

There are lots of good options. The Royal Sonesta on Bourbon is a good bet if available. Close to lots of restaurants and center of action.

There's so many hotels in that part of Nola, just do a quick internet search and you really can't go wrong.

there will be close to 300K on campus that day tailgating...

Honestly, I understand the excitement of Nola, but I'm not sure I'd stay there Friday. The longer drive you have on Saturday, the less time you have tailgating.
Also not sure how good Nola is to people under 21. If y'all have good fake ID's it's a blast, but otherwise, not a lot of options. I'd probably do Nola on Thursday, then go to BR for some Tigerland Friday night.
But that's just my opinion, man.

You'll be amazed when you walk into the stadium. The new expansion is incredible. Enjoy! Hopefully we beat those frickers for a change.

Agree 100%.
Parking will become an issue after 10 a.m. I'm saying that to let you know that the fun starts early, not to scare you about parking.
And I disagree with others about wearing LSU gear. Where the BG gear and get an LSU hat or something.
LSU fans are very proud of their tailgating and hospitality and will love to hear your story. They will adopt you big time.
Hmmm. I should buy myself a University of Montana shirt and make up a story!

over the last 5 years, i have bought outside the stadium at least once a season but it's usually for lesser games. i never have trouble getting a good seat for less than $100 although it's been close a couple of times. also, i'm buying a single ticket. for a group at this game, it will not be easy. if you can get them beforehand for a reasonable amount, do it. you don't want to waste time walking around haggling. plus, you never know if it will be raining. that would be even more miserable. btw, bring decent rain gear.
if you wait until noon to head to campus, you will be disappointed. 10a latest. traffic will be heavy and parking will be an adventure. bring money for parking.
i know much emphasis has been placed on tailgating, with good reason. however, lsu has an incredible campus and gameday routine. walk around as much as you can. it's beautiful. watch the band come down the hill. it is awesome and will get you ramped up for the game. check on gameday for the timeline. should be about 1.5 hours before gametime. people get seats along the street an hour beforehand just to see it. if you get to campus early enough, you will have plenty of time to walk around to tailgates for hospitality and also walk around to see campus and the band coming down the hill.
i can't stress this enough, get to your seats to see pregame. best in cfb. starts 15 mins before gametime. the lines to get in will be LONG. if you're trying to catch pregame, you will stand in line at least 15 mins so prepare accordingly. this is another reason why you don't want to wait until gametime to get a ticket. way better than the dotting of the i.

There are ticket exchanges on this site, as well as dandydon.com and lsusports.net
I would actually start researching these sites NOW for Bama tickets. As has been said, better to have them in hand in advance (or at least at will call or arrangements made to meet) beforehand.
I'm here to tell you, if you're not on campus and parked BEFORE 8:00 a.m. on November 8, you may have to park miles away.
I'd rather be 12 hours early than 1 minute late.
I'd consider parking near the student recreation center not far from the LSU Union.

Something is going on down there because the hotel rooms are high for that time. Have fun, wear your colors. If we see you we will feed and hydrate you!

As far as hotels that are available. Checked trip advisor and these hotels were available:
Prince Conti, Dauphine Orleans, and bourbon Orleans. They are all nice hotels. In that 250-350 a night range. You wont find anything in the quarter lower for that weekend.

Try the Loews hotel. Great location, and often a little cheaper. Very nice place.

Welcome To Baton Rouge, Hope you guys have a GREAT time. and don't forget to hit up Walk-ons or Chimes while you're here. Also, Get there EARLY on Saturday or parking will be a real bitch. You will have no problem finding great food and tailgating, especially if people know why you're here.
Also, I understand the excitement of New Orleans, but a common misconception is that we are the same. BR and NOLA are two different animals, and I wouldn't stay there Friday. I don't want you to spend your Saturday morning sitting in traffic and looking for parking, and I wouldn't recommend wandering around Bourbon Street either.

We travel in every year and hit new orleans on Thursday before the bama game then travel to Baton Rouge and stay there on friday night. Pretty much for the reason you have listed. But also because you can get rooms much cheaper on thursday night than on friday. Waking up early in new orleans is not easy and it always takes twice as long to get to BR as you think it will. And lastly but most importantly the quarter is overrun with gumps on friday night and I would rather not put myself through that.

A summary of comments/opinions:
1) Tix, the majority of posters recommend getting tix before hand for those who must be in the game. This decreases the stress of trying to deal on Gameday when you should be having the time of your life. For those whom the party is the priority, wait and roll the dice.
2) Wear whatever the hell you want to wear and be cordial, outgoing, adventurous, and tell your story bro.
Suggestion: Be proactive and find some posters on this site who are attending that game and setting up a tailgate. Meet them at their site(s).
3) Don't get so drunk that you ruin the experience. The food is off the charts. The campus is beautiful. The women are special. And Tiger stadium is an iconic venue. Cosume some adult beverages but "Don't peak too soon!"
5) Be everywhere early!
6) Traffic is bad everywhere on gameday, so plan to be on campus for early morning coffee.
7) Ask your uncle about places to stay. Hotels are already insane and limited. Don't wait to book.
Best of luck!
