Big Bend NP is an amazing place. The trip is definitely worth it. You will want to see the mountains and the desert. Santa Elena Canyon is a must. Chisos Basin has lodging, camping, and a store. Someone already mentioned it, but check out Bigbendchat.com. There are several scenic unpaved roads, but you will need the right type of vehicle to travel them. I did some on a dual sport bike. Boquillas is the village across the river. Boquillas Overlook is where they leave their crafts and money jars, illegal of course, but I have never heard of the Mexicans getting caught crossing or anyone on the US side getting in trouble for buying. Head to Terlingua for a cold one. Also, Hwy. 170 from Terlingua headed towards Presidio is considered the most scenic road in Texas. People refer to it as River Road because it parallels the Rio Grande. The park is safe, all of the Rangers I have met have been really informative and nice. As you can tell, I like the place. Oh and by the way, I live about 90 miles from the west side of the park. Here are a few shots from a ride.
