Need help embossing an image into another (text on wood)

So the two images below I am trying to combine, making the text (without the white background) looking almost burnt into the wood.
I use GIMP, and am able to remove the white background and layer the images together, but when I emboss I can't seem to make it look like its burnt in. The edges are barely there and the image seems to be really transparent.
Can anyone combine these two images as I described? I'm starting to get a little irritated with it but please let me know how you did it...
