Unfortunately Monk, that's not how the seats work. The recline pivots at the base of the chair backing. This lessens the amount of space around the knees on some flights.

The seats recline so I don't complain. The airline has given them that right. However, there is no way their benefit is larger than what they take away from the passengers behind them. I wonder, however, if the ability for seats to recline is just something that has been there since the time the seats were spaced further from one another. Perhaps no airline wants to risk removing the function for fear of being the airline with seats that don't recline?

I think my bigger flying issue is when my seat reclines on its own. It is pretty annoying to have the flight attendant bother me to move my seat upright when I am sleeping and I did not put it down in the first place.

If you fly enough, regardless of status or airline, you will have issues with something on a flight eventually. You just have to suck it up and make the best of it. There are only a few times it is inconvenient to be tall and this is one of them.

This topic comes up every once in awhile and it's always two schools of thought.

1. Every one who reclines a seat is an a-hole to the person behind them, or

2. Every one who complains about someone utilizing a feature that is installed in a seat they paid for is an a-hole.

Either way, what we have here with this "device" is a breakdown in the social aspect most humans should have and that is the ability to communicate with a stranger and discuss the options. Instead, we live in an "a-hole" culture where they don't want to converse but rather take matters into their own hand and install an "illegal" device to offset their imminent discomfort.

In my opinion, if you are tall and require more knee space, be proactive and buy an emergency exit or first row seat; complaining that someone is encroaching on your space by tilting their chair back 1-2 inches is ridiculous. Also, if you hate reclining chairs, fly Spirit Airlines where no seats lean back.

I personally fall asleep better when I can recline a bit, pull my carry on under my legs and stretch out; I paid for the seat and either checked-in earlier than you(Southwest) or purchased my ticket earlier to receive that seat. If you don't want me to recline, ask me not to but installing a device so you don't have to feel embarrassment over talking to me is horseshite.

Also, I imagine people that complain about this are the same people who have a problem with someone standing at a rock concert/sporting event when they want to sit the entire time. Once again, I bought my ticket and I plan to take advantage of it's use in a way I see fit.
