Start the year off with no privileges. No TV cell phone internet etc. The kid wants to play xbox? Make them show you the homework and it better be right.
Let them earn crap like a cell phone with grades. 4.0 average gets the whole thing free. Lower graders will require the kid to pay a copayment through sweat equity. The kid will learn the value of a $ grades at the same time.
Don't cave and make sure you and your spouse are on the same page with this. It'll take work on your part so be prepared to have to give up your time and relaxation monitoring but it will definitely be worth it when they're 21 and not living on your dime still.
