The idea is that you don't want to put your young qb in a situation where he is set up to fail. They might want to get a little talent around him before just throwing him into the fire.

A more recent example of just throwing the rookie quarterback in day 1 was David Carr. He started in a offense with a horrible offensive line and he set records for most sacks given up probably years in a row if I remember correctly. Some say this ruined his confidence, and we will never know how he would have turned out if he hadn't been put in a situation to fail.

True, and Chad Henne is a solid player that has proven he can win games at this level.
