20 years and these folks are not up to speed? Sounds like you or your company has fell down on evaluations. If it took 20 years for someone to see these 4 engineers are screw ups - ball dropped by someone.

I was kinda thinking the same... Also if the guy that cost you a ton of money has been working for the company 20 years, he's probably saved you tons of money in other areas... How long have you worked for this company?

Sounds more to me like they've been there 20 years and they think they've earned the right to coast. They're not hungry anymore.

The problem with that is that the engineering game has changed drastically over the past 20 years. Clients are more demanding and the pace has accelerated, not slowed down. This is not a a good point in one's career to start slacking off.
