This is where I come down on it, too. I can keeping the name confidential for a relatively brief period of time to make arrangments to ensure his safety, but I think this is more to prevent probing into his background, record on the force, etc.

That's just you jumping to a conclusion based on no evidence whatsoever.
It's much more likely they are keeping the cop's name secret for his and his family's safety.
