Uptown has some smugness, but still a great place to live and fun.
Greenville ave, Henderson, m streets, lower Greenville has a more "garden district" vibe. Great music venue in the Granada Theater, and more local neighborhood bars.

I'd honestly really consider staying in Birmingham. I'm not sure what you do, but if you could really move up the ladder in your career, I'd stay there.
The cost of living has to be cheaper. Birmingham is on the up with their food and drinking scene. Birmingham is a hell of a lot more scenic than Dallas. You get four seasons. The schools are just as good in Birmingham. You're close to your friends, family, and Univ. of Alabama.
I really think Dallas sucks. It's just an ugly, hot, arid, concrete town with nothing but strip malls and apartment complexes.
