Like everyone else, I have no idea whatsoever what the purpose might be (though I could take a pretty good guess).

Your thread was opened tonight, August 13th, and there is nothing in either your OP or the linked story that tells the reader that the mid-vacation return trip to Washington was announced on August 6th, a full week earlier (my previous link had a reference to Aug.8th, but below is one from the Martha's Vineyard Times dated August 6th saying "On Sunday, August 17, the President will return to Washington, D.C., to attend meetings at the White House. He will return to the Vineyard on Tuesday, August 19. If any reader did not know that it was pre-planned, it could easily lead to that reader speculating that events of the last day or two had prompted the brief return. Justin Sink of The Hill (your link) was deficient in not including that fact in his news article.


(That "pretty good guess" I referred to above is that it is entirely symbolic in nature, intended to assure the citizens that he's being hands-on, on-the-scene, in-the-moment, fingers-on-the-pulse, eye-to-eye in the Oval Office, etc, etc, etc.)
