I'm not sure if you and I are in a semantics issue (a difference in definitions) - or if we just genuinely disagree.
Safety Type A - will play centerfield; will not be asked to cover man-to-man on WRs ever, and very seldom on slot receivers (depending on a blitz package); last line of defense;
Safety Type B - will play closer to the LOS; will need some cover skills and will be required to cover slot receivers man-to-man quite often; and even cover an outside receiver on a corner blitz;
In essence, Type A is a Laron Landry or Curtis Taylor type (Martin/Thompson). Type B is more like Brandon Taylor (Jefferson/Mills).
Personally, I have always called Type A as a free safety, because they are "roaming" centerfield. They often will not have a specific receiver to cover, just providing help over the top when needed.
I have called Type B as a strong safety - where they provide value with legitimate cover skills.
