I'm comparing the impact religious based policies can have on those not within that religion.

and the impacts of modern fundamentalist Christianity and modern fundamentlaist islam are nowhere near the same

Using faith as an excuse to deny rights, privileges, benefits, etc...just doesn't sit right with me. Government could be so easy if we'd just allow it to be.

again, go back to my 2nd point. the modern, western christian faith isn't really that out of line with my own beliefs

my moral code and their religious tenets came from the same thing: societal trial and error. there is going to be an overlap. you can try to claim religious or secular influence all you want, but at the end of the day, if it's in line with my beliefs, i'll let it slide if a lawmaker claims it was a message from god

Your beliefs are irrelevant. I'm sure well over 50% of us would be more than happy for things to stay the same. More or less happy with how things are going. Certainly compared to (most of) the rest of the world.

I honestly think that we must be talking about 2 different things. People can believe whatever the frick they want to believe. But those beliefs shouldn't be used as an excuse to deny rights, privileges, benefits, etc to those who don't share the same beliefs. Same rules for everybody.

I'm starting to get this feeling that people are perfectly fine with our government treating people differently.
