until apple figures out how to make it easy to transfer files without relying on itunes, i can't see how their mobile products would ever win this

It depends on the files and the use. I rarely use itunes to transfer files and I mostly use my ipad for pdfs, but also word, ppt, pictures. I transfer and view most files using goodreader, which is a straightforward wifi transfer using the app. Also I use the Dropbox app to view files I've placed there.

But I agree that I generally hate itunes.

They did figure out a way, iCloud Drive.

ETA: or you could use AirDrop, but you have to have a Mac for that.
