This.

Tolkien was a language expert. In English “to fly” may also mean “to flee” or “to escape”. In fact there are many other instances in the books where Tolkien uses "fly" in which the obvious context is "flee" or "escape".

You're making the case for why it isn't a leap in logic.

The point was that he used fly specifically so they might pick up on the double meaning of the word.
