I've never given that line much thought, but now that you mention it, it has to be some kind of mistake in the writing.

That's a solid 40-50 year hole in the time period no matter how you slice it.

I'm fine with just writing it off as a fictional universe where advanced technology can exist in the 60s and 70s, but in that case the writers should have never brought up the depression at all. That way it's never even an issue.
