And we need to narrow down handguns even more. Is this something you want to mainly target shoot with and keep in the house for protection? Would you ever get a permit and carry? Do you prefer revovlers or semi-autos?
Target and home protection go with a classic revolver in .357 and shoot .38 for practice.
If you're going to carry, go with something a little smaller and lighter, like a XD-SC or one of the newer XD Compacts, or a Glock. HK USP is another good one. A buddy of mine has one that I love shooting. And then we get into the caliber wars. I prefer the .40 but one of these days I'm going to pick up a .45ACP either in a 1911 platform or in something Polymer.
If you strictly want something fun to shoot with and nothing else, get a .22. Look for an older Ruger MKII or a Browning Buckmark. If you were closer I'd offer to sell you my Ruger MKII. I just don't shoot it that often.

Mainly for target shooting and protection.
I plan on getting a permit, but I doubt I'd actually carry it very often.
No preference on revolvers vs semi-auto
