So how do we take into account the money we won't be able to spend at local businesses because of their higher prices?

This is so damn misunderstood. I dare you to randomly pick 10 grocery items and go buy the list from Walmart and from a local grocer. I think you will be surprised at the small amount of savings, if any. Maybe $2.

Walmart (or places like them) does have some cheap stuff, but they know which items to hit you on. And on real merchandise, well you end up buying another within a years time because the first one breaks.

When you shop local, you are much more likely to get after the sale service or warranty issues. The local guy has a higher stake in making you happy.
