You seriously don't know?
From 1991-2003, Miami played in the Big East Conference.
In 2004, Miami was now in a division with Florida State, Boston College (Matt Ryan version), Clemson, N.C. State, and Maryland AND had to play Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech (Calvin Johnson version) and North Carolina in certain years.
MUCH tougher conference schedule than the old Big East.
Edit: they joined the ACC in 2004, not 2005.

increased competition in the area with their poor facilities is the bigger issue. Those past teams were talented enough to play in any conference, especially the ACC.
