Buy the sansamp used from eBay if you go that route. Or look at reverb.com. Great prices there too.
They are essentially a foot switch preamp that doubles as a DI and eq for your bass. They work great. Tone hammer makes one like it too. Tone hammer also makes a bass amp as well.

Preamp into the PA is the easiest.
