Yea it kinda matters what you are attempting to do, but I play with some friends now doing a lot of different styles, I have been using one of these that I picked up on the cheap and have to say I love it.

I play a Stingray and Fender J-bass through it and I get a lot of the classic sound I want out of it. Mines 8 years old and I haven't replaced the tubes yet, still sounds great.

Synth pop/rock-type stuff. Empire of the Sun, MGMT, M83, etc.
