It was absolutely powerful that he quit smoking and drinking cold turkey after attending that Bill Graham crusade. Alcoholic with the most powerful excuses to drink. What he endured no man walks away from unscathed. Then BAM--no more. Suddenly a man at peace. Forgave the Bird. Strong stuff there.
I don't believe I have ever read anybody's life story that was comparable to his. Poor juvenile delinquent ends up the Olympics, endured pure hell in the sea for 47 days, tortured for two years, comes home a hero--medal of honor, comes back to track--breaks ankle again, descends into alcoholism.
Read it. It is strong.
