This x1000. Furthermore a player has absolutely no control where he starts his career. Why should i think that a players "legacy" is tarnished because he left the team that drafted him because they had absolutely no intention of getting him any real help to win a championship? I actually respect a player more for leaving a team that is not committed to winning than one that leaves for more money.

Whoaaaa, this is the MSB. Leave the logic at home my friend.
To answer the OP, no, it shouldn't, but that doesn't stop people. It is all subjective. People will use whatever method they need to diminish one player versus another, and they will change the argument whenever neccessary to protect the GOAT in their minds.
Rings are the end-all, be-all in the Jordan vs. LeBron debate, but they aren't neccessary in the Jordan vs. Russell debate. Go figure.
People have been laying the ground work to diminish Tiger Woods for years since it seemed apparent that Tiger would catch and surpass Nicklaus. If Tiger catches Nicklaus, they will diminish him by pointing to Nicklaus' 2nd and 3rd place finishes in majors, or they will make some unfounded comment about the quality of players that each had to face.
Bottom line is that players were better when I was younger than they are today, and I'll do or say whatever is neccessary to preserve my youth. Plain and simple.

Umm, that's not really true. There have been players, most recently Eli Manning comes to mind who didn't play for the team that drafted him.
I agree with your post for the most part though, and Eli is really an outlier. But this is the internet so I'm going to point out that you're wrong.
