This! The ship was compartmentalized. A door would have been closed near the front end to stop the entire ship from flooding. Since it hit the side, it flooded thru several compartments and doors could not be closed in time.

He should have slammed full reverse and ordered all flood hatches to be closed.

Killed people in the forward cabins but not sank. Thats what I always read. Or if it sank it would have been slow enough for rescue.
