I would go with living in a landfill like in Thailand or Bangladesh, but whatever.
Compared to most of the world our poor are doing alright. Biggest problem is those who are poor tend to remain poor for generations, but as TnM83 pointed out that is largely because our welfare system does nothing to discourage the choices that keep one poor. Welfare here actually tends to at least enable poor decision making, if not outright encourage it. All while writing the checks.

Poverty will always exist in societies, just like a classroom will have A, B, C, etc students. Our "F" students have healthcare, food, and a place to live. So, yeah.
