I'm sure that's a big part of it. Saudi must walk a very fine line but with the trillions they have it's much easier for them to do than others.

ISIL presents a direct threat to Saudi stability.
How so? They are not contiguous with Saudi territory. From what I have been reading, the ISIL do not have the ability to expand further south. They are (for the most part) consolidating their gains and creating the conditions for a future "Balkanization" of Iraq.

Saudi royal family is implicit in the support. Without question. Isil is not a direct threat to Saudi. Isil is being used to thwart Iran. They aren't going to change priorities as seen by them avoiding conflict with Kurdish fighters.

Where is ISIL getting its money?

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries have made it difficult for their citizens to provide funds to Islamic causes abroad without government approval. During the war in Afghanistan, Saudi supporters could donate money directly at their mosque with no government supervision.

Thanks for the link!

The link above is more informative, though for some reason you'll have to copy / paste.
I keep coming back to this point: how can ISIL and the FSA be that hard to distinguish when they've been fighting each other for at least a year?

All I would ask from the administration is that they list who they are providing support to.
And trust me, having been on the ground in a messy conflict like that (both Bosnia and Afghanistan), the lines are not so neatly drawn.

That's messed up.
Obama is a friend to the military-industrial complex, too, I guess.

Life is a mess, and war a bigger mess. I believe it. The first three pages of this thread are full of implications that Obama is so stupid as to arm ISIL.
IMO the simple truth is that in this situation no choice is without danger, including doing nothing.

Until we can clearly articulate what we are doing and why, this is the best course of action.
As an aside, your article did an exceptional job of explaining what the challenges are for the ISIL to remain "in power" to the north.
My course of action? Cut off their funding. Let them shrivel and die.

I think you can make a good case that not aiding the FSA allowed ISIL to grow.
The problem with your strategy is that at this point ISIL has plenty of resources. I think their real problem holding on to power is their radicalism. Currently Sunnis in Iraq (especially former regime military) have a marriage of convenience with them. But they don't want a world governed by a fundamentalist interpretation of Sharia.

Honestly? Not sure that cause and effect can be established. There is always a need to blame someone (this board being a perfect example) and there is no shortage of people who are willing to hate. ISIL can grow because it has fertile ground to grow in, not because we did not support FSA adequately.
My two cents.

Just a reminder to all - to us this is a limited engagement. A sideshow.
To all of the actors directly or indirectly involved, this is total war. Life or death in their culture and society.
They will fight accordingly.
