I can see a team taking one of them on, but ~$15m in cap space while paying out an extra $15m on top of that in real money... that's significant to any owner. I would be shocked if they could get a team to take on both of them without sending contracts back.

The Rockets will be sending a bunch of cash to the teams take take Asik and Lin. As others have said, Asik would most probably get close to $15M if he's on the open market. Teams are still enamored with the thought of having a "true" Center.

I wonder if the owner of the Rockets is willing to take a hit with the luxury tax?

June of last year:

“I have enough money, but I don’t have enough championships,” Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said. "If you’re not in it to win championships, you shouldn’t be in it. I would be thrilled to pay the tax if we have a championship-caliber team. Obviously, you have to get the players to pay the taxes. You have to get great players; otherwise, you’re just spinning your wheels. When you get the great players, you don’t want to lose them. You have to pay whatever it takes to keep them. That’s when it becomes really fun to be an owner and to be a fan of the Rockets."

They're only allowed to send out $3m total per season.

Not for one season. His $8m cap hit is reasonable, but the $15m paid by the owner is a lot to ask.
