My best advice is to buy t shirts at various places you go-concerts, festivals, restaurants, whatever. (But not cheesy tourist shirts) They usually are good conversation starters and are sort of unique, rather than some BS you buy at the mall.

I bought a shirt from a barbecue place in Kentucky 2 weeks ago. It looks cool and I've had several people ask me about it.

You start conversations based on t-shirts?

Must be some impressive intellectual debates ensuing around you.
