This may have been a setup to them not having a vote for LC on the show, at least not the way that it went down in the book. Jon had the Wall and did well, kicked arse at the gate and, like you said, Thorne says point blank that when you have to second guess yourself it's time to step down. That would leave Slynt, and they made it a point to show how chicken shite he is and unfit to lead.

I think Thorne reluctantly passes command to Jon.

Yeah agree with a lot of that... But I still think they go on with the vote. That's a huge moment for Sam, arguably his biggest moment in the series. I just think Thorne is gonna remove his name for lord commander and say something along the lines of "I'm not capable of being lord commander" and just pull out of the running.
