Exercises to do with a coonhound mix

I don't hunt, but I've got a half Redbone Coonhound that I think would love to do.... coonhound things. My lab-mix loves to fetch, but the hound gets bored with it after a couple throws. So I feel bad just having her watch me throw a ball for her brother. So are there any good "tracking" games we can play in the back yard? How should I get started with her? (Paging B&TCoonhound?)

Give it to me. I've got a job for it.

You'd have to fight my wife for her. And to be honest, she's got me wrapped around her finger when she gives me to droopy eyes look (which is often).

get some coon scent and put a little on a training dummy...drag it in a nice long trail and have it end somewhere that you have stashed a treat the the dog likes...when he finds it, he gets the treat and praise from you...
I think that would actually be a pretty fun game to play with any hound dog...

Aside from roadkill, where can I get this?

You can buy bottles of it. It's just bottled coon piss.
ETA: Or kill a coon and skin it out

I'll go with option 1. Will Academy have it?
What's the best way to get started - how short of a distance the first time? And will she get confused with several trails in the yard?

I'm not sure if academy would have it. Probably not. I think cabelas does.
What I do with mine is put a power aide bottle with some water in it in an old sock. Put some coon scent on the sock (heads up: it smells reallll bad) and make about a 20 yard trail and hang it up in the tree pretty low. After she finds it let her have it. After one time she'll probably figure it out.
If you want to make it real fun. Tie a rope to it and throw it high in the tree and make her jump for it and bark at it. Just be aware that if your neighbors have cats or anything, she might start treeing them.

Awesome, thanks
They already chase cats out of the yard, so I'm not concerned about that.

agree with downshift...you can get coon scent anywhere that has hunting dog training supplies (i.e. cabelas bass pro shops, etc.)...you won't need much, so just get a small bottle with an eye dropper in it to use. also, you will be training the dog to hunt coons, so be aware of any complications that could occur if there are real coons in the area...don't want your dog jumping fences and getting run over while tracking a coon that came around the night before...
for your purposes, really any scent that the dog could associate with "the game" would work fine...

Yep. I would probably use something other than coon piss if you don't care about actually having a coon dog. It just needs some type of job. Anything that burns its nose a little bit will work.

Good to know. The wife probably won't like the idea of coon poss anyway. Any ideas of something else that would work? Just look around in cabelas?

Well any type of bottled game scent will be bottled piss. Maybe hotdogs or something? Pretty much anything will work.

Got it. I'll try something and report back

I'd try hotdogs. Tie a string around it and drag it around and leave it somewhere. They catch on quick. Start putting it in the tree after and make her tree it for a while. That wears them out quicker than anything.

She just stands there and barks at it up in the tree?

That's what coon dogs are supposed to do

This is what they're bred to do
Skip to 1:37. If she starts doing that she'll get un-bored pretty quick
