I had a 9 hour layout in Frankfurt last year. Here is what I did.

1. Went to luftansa arrivals lounge and showered (was in b class),
2. left my carryon bags in a baggage holding place (it was near the same area as the arrival lounge, you handed them your bags, paid a small fee upon picking up baggage),
3. took a train to franfurt haupwatze (sp?) station which takes you to center of town. Smack dab in the center. Be sure to take the correct line which goes all the way to that station.
4. Walked around town and explored.
5. Had a beer and some grub in the town square (you'll know it when you see it).
6. Catch train back to airport with plenty of time for lufstansa lounge beers/drinks.

ETA, I really enjoyed my experience.

Thanks. This is the info I was searching for. I don't have any checked baggage to deal with so I'll take this advice.

that is almost exactly what I did there except for the showering in the arrivals lounge. I had an unexpected layover there during the Italian transit strikes a few years ago that cancelled my flight and the next available one wasn't for about 8 hours.
