Statehood was voted on and overwhelmingly won with a 90+% tally.. I do recall though the number being disputed because of a low voter eligibility.. Not sure of the number but the main threat the islanders felt was not from white Americans but the growing Asian population of the time. At that time all political positions were appointees and the natives only appointed other natives to the important positions such as governorships of the different regions.
