I think that is a strong possibility.

Another thought:
I think Fringe did a really good job of gradually bringing Walter back to reality also. In those first few episodes he was hilarious, but you couldn't really take him seriously. I think gradually thru the first 6 episodes you little by little see him refind his mind. There are still little things that make you wonder but that is what keeps you on your toes.

Yeah, as much as Season 1 feels like it doesn't matter in the bigger picture with so many key elements thrown away, it does a very good job of laying the foundation for the show.
