Trying to delete my Google+ profile mainly because of hangouts and I don't need another profile out there. However I am worried that this will also delete my gmail account. This quote has me worried.
Will gmail account be deleted if I delete my Google+ profile?

All google accounts are tied to one another. You can't delete google+ and maintain gmail.

Do you know how, if at all possible to revert back to the old gmail after upgrading to hangouts?

A couple of folks made the mistake of linking their personal Gmail to the company profile. No way out of that sinkhole except offing yourself.

No. Only your Picasa and Youtube account will be deleted. Your actual Gmail account wont be deleted.
Here is the link

You absolutely can. Deleting your Google account is what gets rid of everything.
