The Syrian conflict epitomizes how convoluted middle eastern politics really is.

This is where the lines are drawn:

Pro Assad
Russia
Iran
Hezbollah
China (kinda but not really)

Pro Insurgency
Al Qaeda
"The West"
Saudi and almost the entire Arab World

It's an indicator of how much Sunni's really hate the Shiite's. The US will certainly be on the right side of history by supporting Sunni regimes (such as Saudi).

We haven't chosen a Sunni/Shiite "side." We've opposed a Shiite-led government in Iran, but not because they are Shiite. We've opposed Sunni groups elsewhere, including AQ and its affiliates.

Good post. The Saudis have enough money to fund the rebels. Let them do it.
I'm still of the belief Assad gets a kick in the head from us after the midterm elections.
