They should be able to do it because of freedom of choice. Uber (Lyft as well) is a reputation based company so that customers can have the best experience possible when it comes to needing a ride. The drivers do go through background checks and cars are inspected, so they do make sure safety is a priority. Cab companies should be scared because it is competition but that is also why it is great for the consumer.
