It's because the rookie wage cap. A players money now comes in their second contract whether you are a 2nd rounder or UDFA. So the faster you get to the second contract, the faster you get your money.

You have to last four years in the league to get a second contract. Guys drafted in the later rounds have less than a 50 percent chance of even making a roster their first year.
