Most everything listed in this thread is what I would term Death Metal or Black Metal or shite like that.
Those carrying the flag of the true basic hard rock and metal like existed in the 70's and 80's is taking place in Europe, with a few exceptions such as bands like Holy Grail.
ETA: Here's a short list for rock/metal lovers to check out for current music:
