NATO’s second-in-command says Russia is now an enemy, not a partner

NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow now says that the allied group has been compelled to treat Russia “as more of an enemy than a partner,” according to an Associated Press report published Thursday.
quote:
NATO should think about “upgrading” joint exercises among partner nations, the site quoted Vershbow as saying during the event, while acknowledging that deploying forces to Georgia would be a “controversial” maneuver.
“It is also important for the United States to show leadership… to make sure that next steps that NATO will make, for example at the summit in September, will be adequate response to what’s happening in Ukraine,” the Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania said during the discussion.
quote:
“The West should now seize the opportunity and create the reality on the ground by accepting membership of aspirant countries, by putting purely defensive assets in aspirant countries and predominantly in Georgia,” Alasania added. “What is important now is to put some deterrent capabilities on the ground like air defense and anti-armor capabilities that will give us a chance to defend our freedom, because we know that if things go wrong at this point no one is coming to save us; we’ve seen that in 2008.”
Earlier this week, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said the builduip of NATO troops near Russia’s border was “unprecedented.” Weeks earlier, the US Air Force commander in charge of NATO’s military presence in Europe said that US troops may soon be deployed to the region as tensions continue to worsen near the border between Ukraine and Russia.

Two things:
1. I thought NATO's primary reason for existing was the consideration of Russia as an enemy
2. "The 80's called, it wants its foreign policy back"

The only way NATO will ever accept Russia as a partner is when the Russians drop to their knees and pray in front of the altar of political correctness and stupidity.
NATO countries will soon be overrun by the dark people of the world and they want the Russian Federation to join them in this fate

Really he's, at best, NATO's third in command (though he has no command); and I'm not even that familiar with the sausage-making in Mons. And Russia has always been an adversary (not necessarily an enemy proper) and never a partner--in spite of what four successive administrations have fed to whomever.

Soviet Union. After it's fall Russia was considered an Ally.

I always just quote the article title in my thread titles. I don't know enough about NATO's command chain to contribute in this area.

SACEUR (Supreme Allied Commander Europe) is an American 4-star in command of NATO's forces (he's co-hatted as EUCOM's commander
NATO's Secretary General is the civilian, European equivalent who typically hails from a country that doesn't matter all that much. There have been three Brits, one German, and a couple of Italians since NATO was formed; the rest were from Belgium, the Netherlands, and the Nordic states.

No one knows how this hit will shake out, and there has been (on the surface) a change in the strategic calculus. But we are not nearly close to any kind of pitched conflict with Russia. We don't want it. They don't want it. Europe doesn't want it. Nobody who matters wants it.

while this may be true, these sorts of things can change quickly and it just takes one misread from one side to cause the dominos to fall.
I don't think WW3 is about to break out by any means but a philosophy shift may be in order for the American populace and policy makers.

The russians know Europe relies on the US for military might like a bunch of welfare recipients needing money for some air jordans. Putin also understands that Obama is weak and slow to handle to a crises giving Putin all the time he needs without a direct challenge.

this is what it looks like. Seems like we have the old Soviet empire coming back.

After 10-years killing ragheads and wasting trillions, I'm not too sure the American people have much of an appetite for war. If, however, troops can spend their R&R boning chicks in Kiev and Sophia instead of jerking off in Baghdad and Kabul, I'm sure we can work something out.

God no.

there is certainly a war-weariness factor involved, which is primarily what concerns me.
If you know it and I know it, Putin knows it. How far is he going to push that? Are you at all concerned he pushes too far to a point we have no choice but to respond?

quote:Europe has much more at stake than the USA does. No one is going rogue on this, just Russia. Level heads will prevail. Putin is strong arming now, but Russia (not USSR) will pay for it hard in time.
