This isn't really new. The difference is that there are corporations lining up to do this as opposed to the pawn shop or loan shark enabling this.
this is how my grandparents lived. Hand to mouth, despite both having good jobs. They blew everything they hand and then some. I know my grandfather was in deep with a couple merchants when he was chief of police!
