If you read Ecclesiastes, the point of that book is showing that almost everything that man pursues is just vanity--acquisition of wealth, building a lasting legacy through children, building a lasting legacy through politics or science... whatever.
Pretty much the best thing any man can do is spoken of in Ecclesiastes 5:17-19 ( LINK):

quote:
17 Here is what I see as good: It is appropriate to eat and drink and prosper from all the toil one toils at under the sun during the limited days of life God gives us; for this is our lot.
18 Those to whom God gives riches and property, and grants power to partake of them, so that they receive their lot and find joy in the fruits of their toil: This is a gift from God.
19 For they will hardly dwell on the shortness of life, because God lets them busy themselves with the joy of their heart.

If you are going to quote Ecclesiastes to assert the best thing a man can do, there's a verse where it's said explicitly.
The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. (Ecclesiastes 12:13 NASB)
